We would recommend the shuttle, maybe the walk back down is recommended. Once the bus drops you off, you can either take a shuttle or walk up the winding road to the top, where the shrine is located (~30 min walk). The shrine is located at the very top of a mountain. You can take tours, but just the trip alone was worth seeing and relaxing during the journey. This is a 3 hour trip, so be sure to plan ahead if you are going to visit. For the travel we took a train from Rome to Spoleto, then connected on a bus which transported us to Cascia. We would recommend staying in Cascia for at least 1 night or even the surrounds for 2-3 nights in order to spend more time at the shrine. It takes time and patience to get to the shrine if you are relying on public transportation, as we did. This is a MUST to do for people planning to travel to Italy and Rome. That was an unforgettable day! A modest village where God revealed His miracles. For Couples or young people, we recommend spending the day in Cascia then sleeping in Assisi. The nearby restaurants are clean and serve delicious food. By the way, the souvenirs you buy (including water) are not sacred, you can go to the Basilica, access the Sacrestia and the priest will bless the items. In your way back it’s easier to take the normal stairs and discover the surroundings. The Monastery and Basilica are located at the top of the hill in the village. For elderly people or family with kids, we recommend staying in Cascia for one night. The trip was so easy and smooth, with nice scenery. The same bus returns to Rome at 3:00pm in summer time (from April to October), and at 4:00pm in winter time (from November to March). I advise you to go early, reserve your ticket, and wait for the bus while having your coffee at the bus station coffee shop. Only one bus leaves Tiburtina to Cascia at 7:30am on daily bases. Arriving there, go up to the street level and cross the roads to reach Tiburtina Bus Station. An unforgettable visit! Do not miss it!
